RAM – see Random Access Memory

Random Access Memory (RAM) –The location where data is stored temporarily so that it can be retrieved by the computer processor very quickly instead of writing it to the hard drive or hard disk. Data stored in the RAM remains there until the computer is shut down. RAM comes in a variety of sizes, example 8MB, 16MB, 128MB, 256MB, etc.

Read Only Memory (ROM) – Computer memory that can be read but not written to and is used to boot your computer. This information is never lost when the computer is shut down.

Registry – In systems running Micorsoft Windows, this is the location where information pertaining to the state of the computer is kept. It stores information such as a list of system options that have been selected, any hardware that is attached, how the computer's memory is set up, and what application programs should be present when the operating system is started.

ROM – see Read Only Memory

Router – A device or piece of software that is usually connected to at least two networks and determines the next network point to which a packet (or data) should be forwarded to in order to reach its final destination. In a home or small business, routers are most commonly used to share Internet resources among all computers on the network. By managing the IP addresses of each computer on the LAN, the router can direct data transfers among the internal computers, share a single Internet connection among them, and provide basic firewall protection by closing ports.
