File Allocation Table (FAT) – A table that contains a "map" of the files on a hard drive and the actual clusters they have been stored in. Think of it as an "index" to the drive. The table is used and maintained by the Operating System and resides on the hard drive. If the FAT is damaged, then it becomes very difficult, if not impossible, to recover any data on the hard drive since the Operating System will not know where to look for it.

File server – A computer that primarily "serves files" to client computers. It may also be capable of hosting special purpose computers or additional applications.

File system – An independent software component that imposes structure on the address space of one or more physical drives. It provides a method with which files are named and stored on the hard drive. Most Operating Systems use file systems that organize files in a hierarchical manner (ie. using directories, or folders, and paths).

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) – A protocol used for the transfer of information between two computers. It is generally used to copy files between a client computer and an archive site.

Firewall – An added security object used on networks to block access to from the Internet or computers on the Intranet. There are hardware firewalls, appliances placed between the network and Internet connection, and software firewalls that are installed on individual computers..

Font – A character set at a particular size and style for printing or on-screen display.
